This past weekend (Thursday to Sunday) I went to San Juan, PR with three friends.  It's only a 4 1/2 hour plane ride from the east coast and I felt like I was in a lush tropical paradise.  San Juan has stunning emerald blue water, great night life in Old San Juan, and the most beautiful scenery.
We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan.  Staying in Old San Juan allowed us to get lost in the blue cobblestone streets, watch the sunrise over the Old Fort, and party until the wee hours of the morning without driving anywhere.  We did decide to rent a car anyway which turned out to be well worth it.  With all there is to do in Old San Juan there is still plenty of exploring to do outside of the city and  having a car allowed us to be free to explore San Juan at liberty.   We zip lined through El Yunque National Park, relaxed on Boqueron Beach, overindulged at curb side kiosks (The most delicious-mouth-watering-food I had in San Juan came from curb side kiosks).
This was my first trip to San Juan and found it to be the perfect gateway from the harsh winter weather in Pittsburgh.  I think I might visit San Juan annually in November as plane tickets are low (around $300), the hotels are cheaper ($160 a night), and I don't have to worry about my passport, or exchanging money.
